Volunteer Spotlight: Nikki Kumar

Today, dLCV would like to highlight one of our newest volunteers, Nikki Kumar.  Nikki started volunteering with dLCV as of May of this year.  We at dLCV are so happy to have Nikki bring her insights and experience to dLCV as we all work together to protect and advocate for the rights of Virginians with disabilities. Welcome aboard Nikki!  Check out what Nikki’s experience with dLCV has been as a volunteer so far in her own words:

1) How did you first get involved with dLCV?

I first got involved with dLCV after spending several years volunteering with disability-focused nonprofits in Richmond. While researching similar organizations online, I came across dLCV and was immediately drawn to their mission. I read about their work in the community and was really impressed by their commitment to protecting the rights of individuals with disabilities. I knew right away that I wanted to be a part of their efforts.

2) What volunteer activities have you been involved in?

As a volunteer with dLCV, I’ve primarily been involved in evaluating incident reports from the community. It’s been a meaningful way to support their advocacy efforts and gain insight into the real-world challenges faced by individuals with disabilities.

3) Why is disability advocacy important to you?

Disability advocacy is important to me because I believe everyone deserves to live free from abuse, neglect, and discrimination. I recently graduated from William & Mary with a major in Government and a minor in Data Science, and I focused much of my research on disability law and policy. Giving back to the community has always been a personal passion of mine, and I see disability advocacy as one of the most impactful ways to do that.”

4) What would you say to someone thinking about volunteering with dLCV?

I would absolutely encourage anyone considering volunteering with dLCV to go for it! It’s a great experience with a welcoming and supportive community. You’ll learn a lot, feel good about the work you’re doing, and contribute to a mission that truly makes a difference.”

5) What’s something you enjoy outside of volunteering with dLCV?

A fun fact about me is that I’ve been a lifeguard for six years! I love swimming and staying active—it’s a fun and rewarding job that keeps me on my toes.”
