Our View of the Legislature – Transportation

We know that people with disabilities, especially in the more remote areas of the Commonwealth, face serious challenges in obtaining transportation. Every year, the disAbility Law Center of Virginia hears from our constituents about this very complicated problem. There is not an easy solution! The legislature is considering doing a deep dive to identify some options.

  • HJ 445 (Laufer) directs the Joint Legislative Audit and Review Commission to study transportation options in rural areas for persons with disabilities and identify ways to expand or enhance such transportation services. This bill is a recommendation of the Virginia Disability Commission.

The legislature assigns questions like this to the Joint Legislative Audit and Review Commission each year. JLARC has talented and thoughtful staff who research options from other states, collect information from all across the Commonwealth, and develop recommendations for future legislatures to consider. If this resolution is adopted, dLCV will offer to assist JLARC with this important task.

Our mission is to advance independence, choice, and self-determination; protect legal, human, and civil rights; and eliminate abuse, neglect, and discrimination of people with disabilities through zealous and uncompromising legal advocacy and representation. We are available to educate policymakers about the potential impact of legislative proposals. Please let us know of any legislation that you think we should be following, by emailing ga@dlcv.org.
