Our View of the Legislature

2026 Virginia General Assembly

January 7, 2026

Welcome to “Our View of the Legislature” for 2026. With these regular highlights, the disAbility Law Center of Virginia will share with you our view of the activities in the General Assembly and let you know how specific proposals might impact the lives of Virginians with disabilities and their friends, family and supporters.

The 2026 legislative session in Virginia will begin Wednesday, January 14th at noon. In even numbered years, the legislature meets in what is called a “long session,” typically 60 days. The legislature will consider hundreds of bills and, most importantly, will adopt a state budget for state fiscal years 2027-2029.

We expect the session to end on Saturday, March 14.

Already, dozens of bills have been proposed, many of which could impact the lives of people with disabilities. The issues range from voting rights, to changes to the Uniform Healthcare Decision Making Act, and to issues relating to suicide prevention. You can learn more by joining us for our “kick off” on Monday, January 12 at this link: https://dlcv.salsalabs.org/2026-ga-kickoff

You can also stay apprised of developments in these important policy decisions by checking our legislative highlights here on a regular basis. We post regular updates to our website, to Facebook and on twitter.
