Welcome to “Our View of the Legislature” for 2025. With these regular highlights, the disAbility Law Center of Virginia will share our view of the activities in the General Assembly and let you know how specific proposals might impact the lives of Virginians with disabilities and their friends, family, and supporters.
The 2025 legislative session in Virginia will begin Wednesday, January 8th at noon. In odd-numbered years, the legislature meets in a “short session,” typically 45 days. The legislature will consider hundreds of bills and amend the two-year budget they adopted last spring.
We expect the session to end on Saturday, February 22.
Already, dozens of bills have been proposed, many of which could impact the lives of people with disabilities. The issues range from voting rights to mental health services and the protection of children with disabilities who are in foster care. You can stay apprised of developments in these important policy decisions by checking our legislative highlights here regularly. We post regular updates to our website, on Facebook, and X.
Our mission is to advance independence, choice, and self-determination; protect legal, human, and civil rights; and eliminate abuse, neglect, and discrimination of people with disabilities through zealous and uncompromising legal advocacy and representation. We are available to educate policymakers about the potential impact of legislative proposals. Please let us know of any legislative proposals or budget issues that you think we should be following.
