The 2021 General Assembly session is in a very odd posture today. Under their official calendar, on Friday, each house was supposed to have complete work on bills that began in that house. They were to begin work on bills from the other house today. However, as the session was scheduled, originally, to end on Thursday, they could not have completed much work before the end of the session.
Last week, the Governor extended the length of the session, by calling for a “special session” to begin on Wednesday, February 10th and run until Saturday, February 27, 2021. As a result, the Senate has ended its work for the regular session, as of this morning, without taking any action on the House bills under its review. House committees are meeting all day today to simply vote to carry over all Senate bills into the special session. We expect that when the House meets this afternoon at 3, they, too, will call the regular session closed.
There are no committee meetings scheduled for Tuesday, except for judicial interviews. However, House committee chairs did announce that they will have “docketing meetings” tomorrow, where the committee leadership meets with legislative services staff to draft meeting agendas for the remainder of the session. We hope to start seeing those agendas soon.
